What does retrograde mean?

In relation to the earth, the planet appears to be going backwards in the sky. However, it is maintaining it’s normal trajectory.

Each planet’s retrograde has a different energy it brings into our life. Typically old lessons come up for review and we are pushed to reexamine the way we do things in our lives.

Relationships, patterns, jobs, cycles, etc end and we begin to redefine ourselves and make changes more in tune with our personal desires and capabilities.

Retrogrades are an opportunity not a punishment

Many people view retrogrades as difficult. Depending on the placement of the planet in relation to your own astrological chart, you will notice that you enjoy certain retrogrades and some are harder and require more from you.

Retrogrades aren’t a punishment or and external force we can put our blame into. If you surrender your power and become a victim to these energies it may be harder for yourself in the long run.

Theme of this retrograde

I personally love this retrograde. It happens every year and this tiny little planet brings rich opportunity for growth when it comes to healing our relationship with our shadow self and integrating it into our being.

Our shadow self is a part of who we are. It’s not a bad thing, we all have a shadow self and accepting and integrating it in our lives actually helps us better handle our emotions and create better relationships and accomplish our goals.

What is the shadow self?

The shadow self is a concept originally spawned from Carl Jung. The shadow self is our more emotional and animalistic nature. It tends to be a part of us that we reject, shut down, avoid, or shame.

How to handle and make the most of this retrograde
  • Focus on loving and forgiving yourself instead of resorting to self criticism or shame
  • Take moments to regularly breath and ground, triggers may present themselves but look at them as an opportunity to handle them in a new way or look back at them in retrospect for lessons for next time
  • Make time for processing your emotions; journal, create, reach out to healers and support groups
  • Allow yourself permission to feel your emotions and let them pass through you without resisting or holding onto them longer than need be
  • Avoid laziness, procrastination, or negative/distracting coping mechanisms.

I was once a queen of rejecting, burying, and shaming my shadow self. I feel like I was on a mission to cut it out of myself. Eventually I learned that all it needed was my love and acceptance.

That didn’t come easy. Working with healers who saw and heard me share these parts of myself with out judgment was vital to developing my own self acceptance.
